Books On My Bed

Being the bookworm that I am, I read a lot of books.
Start a lot of books...
Never finish a lot of books...
Generally I have at least half a dozen I'm reading at a time. New stuff, old stuff, stuff somebody gave me, stuff I found at random. Yeah.
Today I noticed that I have an absurd amount of books on my bed. Not counting school books, notebooks, planners, and my Bible, I found seven novels making themselves at home between my sheets. And what were these discoveries? Well, I suppose I'll tell you.

Book numero uno

"Black" - Ted Dekker
For those of you who don't know me, I am quite admittedly a Dekkie. I own almost all of his books. I'm constantly going through shelves at Ollie's to find a Dekker book I don't already own, or a hardcover copy of one I do.
Black I am re-reading. This may possibly be the third time I'm going through it. I'm not quite sure. It's a beautifully written fantasy/adventure/thriller that makes you wonder if this world is real. Elements of Biblical stories are blended into Dekker's original ideas to create a new world of ostensible ( heh, vocab word :) good and evil. But it's like Lay's - you can't read just one.

Libro dos

"Alfred Hitchcock's Solve-It-Yourself Mysteries"
Yeah, so, um, small admission here...
I haven't actually read it.
Any of it.
A trip to the library that displayed a very unorganized young adult's section and a very interesting children's corner resulted in me checking out this book. It looks delicious, but I've yet to take a bite.

Three (Spanish is overrated)

"Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" - Lewis Carroll
Well, of course I would sleep next to my favorite book! I can't tell you how many times I've read it. Possibly thirty. Maybe more. It has everything - old book feel and smell, perfectly antediluvian illustrations, written for a child... I love it :)

Cuatro (Just kidding)

"Saxe's Complete Poems"
When I was little, my dad would have me read a poem from this book every night. Can't say I totally loved it then, but it's grown on me. Some works are so full of eloquent truth, you can't resist it. Maybe next time, I'll tell you some of my favorite poems and stories from John Saxe.
On a side note, there's a message written on the first page to whoever this book was gifted to. It's dated 1927.

5 (SO much easier)

"Ghostly Tales and Eerie Poems of Edgar Allan Poe"
I love Poe, and, once again, I've yet to read even the first page. I plan on it tonight though. It looks eerie. O.O

6

"Come Away My Beloved" - Frances J. Roberts
Oh, if I only I could describe the wonderful truths in this little book, but I can't even begin to! I HIGHLY recommend it! If anyone could ever come close to capturing God's voice in such a beautiful way, Frances Roberts has done it.

Last one

"99 Questions Jesus Asked" - Jason Ostrander
I heard Jason speak at Creation Fest this past summer (he was also the MC for the Main Stage), and it was an expatiation of three or four of the questions in this books. I haven't finished it, and I kind of wish he would go into more detail in some, but if you want something short to ignite a study of your own - or with friends - I'd recommend this. It's geared towards teens, so... yeah.

And that's all! I hope I may have directed you towards some amazing books. I know they're amazing. Hopefully you will think the same :)

Cloudless Raspberries

So, the past, like, four days have been absolutely gorgeous! When you live in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and it's the middle of March, you're expecting snow and/or rain until at least the middle of April.
'Tis not the case this year. Yesterday was 75 degrees.
I am not a Texan, thanks.
Generally, I like my winter, but I have to say, I'm really lovin' the whole shorts and flip flops thing :)

Softball is starting to consume my life.
It's a funny thing -- during the off season (which is a whopping three months for me), I was feeling really not into the softball thing. I was expecting it to really be a downer (dunno why).
But of course, now that it's started I'm totally in love again! I love the girls, the game, the instensity -- it's my thing. It's very nice to have a thing. If you don't have a thing, I suggest you go get one. Right now. Go! :]

Random: I just overheard my brother saying,
'I haven't taken a shower in days and I'm okay.'
No, Isaiah, you're not.

I tried a new lemon bar recipe last night.
In case you didn't know, I happen to be famous for my lemon bars (ya know, within the... very small... limited persons who've tried them...), but I was looking for something even more extraordinary!
So. Allrecipes.com. Bar cookies. Top 20 lemon bar recipes. #1 plus reviewer's suggestions.
Bad lemon bars.
They were super strong.
When pouring the lemon mixture onto the crust, the crust... I don't even know what. It popped out of it's pan or something.
They didn't cook evenly.
And then, the worst thing that could possibly happen to any amateur baker. I feel embarrassed just admitting it...
I found...
in my lemon bar...
an eggshell.
*Insert weeping here*
I almost died.
I have not let one teensy weensy eggshell enter any of my baked goods in the past fours years.
And yet, there it was.
I think I shall retire from the lemon bar baking days.
Or at least switch to my old recipe.

Shoes & Blondies

What began as a casual stroll through Salvation Army, ended as a passionate love affair...

Photobucket
With these shoes.

In case you didn't know, I happen to be obsessed with all things created by Blowfish Shoes. I found these cute little things for $5 at Salvation Army. I don't know their name, but I will love them anyway.

Photobucket

Can you imagine what I did when I found these at Sal's?

Photobucket

That and I almost cried. To think that someone would give away these adorable shoes! *tear*

Hobbits, Wangs, and The Unknown

These are my third pair of Blowfish. You may remember me mentioning my second pair back around Christmas. $80 shoes for $30? Only at Marshall's :)

Photobucket
Why yes, I am wearing Tinker Bell pajama pants.

I made some delicioso blondies today. They had chocolate chips... and sorta tasted like chocolate chip cookies. But not really.

Photobucket

I ate too many.

I'm getting uber-excited for my youth group's annual winter retreat! I was even more excited when a whopping two snowflakes fell from the sky today. Perhaps we will have snow camp with snow! instead of 60 degree weather.

Squeaky Clean

Reading: East of Eden by John Steinbeck

Listening to: Maroon 5 (I feel totally weird saying that... don't judge me. I got moves like Jagger ;)

Mmhmm

The other day I had this weird impulse to read some literature (I think it had to do with the smell of old books surrounding me. Sometimes I wonder if people ever spike books...). To the bookshelf I went and after browsing for a while I discovered Of Mice and Men. I've always wanted to read it, just to know what it's about, so I said what the hay and read it in two hours (which is a bit embarrassing since it's only 100 pages long.).
So it's a depressing book. But not totally as depressing as what I thought. It's depressing for the obvious reason, of course, there's something much deeper there that made me think. I almost felt like it was a story that could've happened any day, every day. There didn't seem to be any huge moral point or really any point at all. It was just a story about two guys trying to make their way during the Depression. They could have been any men you saw walking down the street. All they wanted was a better life - and they almost got it.
Anyway, I discovered while reading the little prelude on John Steinbeck that he also wrote East of Eden. I've seen the movie (James Dean. I HAD to, obviously.) and thought it was pretty good (mostly because of James Dean), so I ran to the library to borrow it.
I was unaware that East of Eden by John Steinbeck was 601 pages long. And not small juvenile fiction pages. So I've been attempting to read 50 pages a day. It's not actually been that difficult because the story's very interesting - but it's not what I expected.
The book is divided into several parts and the movie apparently omitted at the least the first part so this has been like reading a totally different book - which is awesome.
It's a bit dark, in some aspects, but it totally reveals the author, and that's something I've never so explicitly observed in a book.
So I'll let y'all know how it is when I finish :)

I've found something. A TV show. A slightly old TV show. A TV show that really shouldn't be old, but is, which makes me feel old.
   One Tree Hill.
1158959-11-1322498229715_large
OK, so it's still airing. But I'm talking old school, 2003 One Tree Hill. Yea. I never watched these shows because I was... 8 when the show started. But I think just growing up in that era, you find yourself loving the shows of that time (i.e., the early 2000's). So I randomly started watching is on Netflix, fell in love with Chad Michael Murray, and... I'm addicted. Just like that. My parents should be happy I don't dabble in anything worse than TV shows with my addictive personality... then again, maybe TV shows are worse...

   Naahhh!!!

I also had the wonderful experience of gluing styrofoam peanuts to my eyebrows*, being on TV, and embarrassing my sister's best by dancing to "Forever" in the middle of the street - and singing along.

Cheers
