A Word To the Bridesmaids

I start this with my own experience and the stories of others in mind. I am currently in the honorary position of a bridesmaid for the first time in my life, and this after having already been the bride. I want to share my thoughts on bridesmaid Do’s and Don’t’s from both sides. As a bride, I can tell you what my bridesmaids did that was helpful, that was unhelpful, and what I would have liked them to have done more of. I’ll share with you a bit of what the bride feels during the engagement time, if you don’t already know, and I’ll tell you what I think will be best for you to keep in mind.
1.       Do give as much physical assistance as needed.
I don’t think any bride will ever say her bridesmaids did too much work when it came to her wedding day. Be asking what you can do, and make yourself available for as much of it as you can. Especially if there are a lot of DIY projects going on, the bride will always be happy to have extra hands to help out. I had plenty of projects that went on until the late hours of the night, and few of them actually came to fruition, just because I ran out of time and willing hands to get it all done. No matter how small the project, no matter how much hot glue gets pasted to your hands, it will be greatly appreciated, and will make the work go by faster, as well as make it more fun!
2.       Don’t overwhelm the bride with YOUR ideas.
I’ll admit, I needed as much help as I could get in the idea department, and I came up very shorthanded. But more often than not, instead of offering suggestions that go along with a bride’s theme or wedding dream, bridesmaids can say what THEY think would look good and how THEY think the bride should do things. If the bride is gracious, but firm in her thinking, she’ll nicely tell her bridesmaids that’s not what she wants and that’ll be that. Of course there’s the drama of girls being hurt over their suggestions being shot down, but that’s a whole other can of beans. Some brides will feel trampled on and will easily give in to other ideas. To avoid this whole catastrophe, I suggest working on this: be helpful and suggest ideas, but try to only verbalize thoughts that connect to the bride’s plan. You want to help the bride’s dream wedding come into reality, and you can truly help with that! But if she’s going more traditional and you’re suggesting hot pink table cloths with glitter on everything, it won’t be very helpful. Do your best to branch off of her plans and give suggestions for details, for how to better accomplish something. We’ve all been gifted differently, and you may have a more inexpensive and less laborious way of putting those centerpieces together – vocalize your idea! And even more importantly – don’t be offended if your idea isn’t used. You’re here to help. If you’re one of six bridesmaids, chances are, not all the ideas offered will be used. This isn’t about you, it’s about helping your girl out! Be glad when she uses something you suggest, but be humble and not pitiful when your idea doesn’t work out.
3.       Respect her time with her man.
If I could say anything about being engaged, it’s this: you ALWAYS want time with your guy, and with the mounting stress of getting married, you probably won’t be able to part with him for more than a few hours. Not really, but pretty close. I’m gonna address this a little better later, specifically looking at single girls and helping them better understand having a close friend in a relationship, but for now, I’ll leave it at this. It’s nothing personal, but sometimes, the bride is going to simply want some alone time with her husband-to-be, and you will have to respect that. I understand that you’ve been best friends since you were two years old, and you’ve never spent more than that week you were both on separate family vacations apart from each other. But things are gonna change, if you haven’t realized that by now. Sometimes the best cure for wedding stress is some time away from all that estrogen, and a relaxing evening with her man, remembering the reason she’s undergoing all this work.
4.       Pray for her.
Pray after you leave her for the night. Pray on your way to work, Pray with her when you see she’s overwhelmed to the point of tears. Engaged couples covet your prayers something fierce, and if there’s one thing you can do to help, it’s to ask the greatest One there is to bring peace and strength to that couple.
I know that these points will vary from bride to bride. Some women may want you to give them every possible idea you’ve got! Some will need more emotional support. Some will want distance, but more hands-on help. You know your girl, and you know how you can best help her. If you’re at a loss, pray for her. This is a stressful time on her, on her relationship with her fiancĂ©, even on her friendship with you. You need to understand that and help her. Be somebody she can go to for advice, or just be there so she can hand a project off to you so she can unwind with her man. You may feel underappreciated, but trust me, when the big day is over, and she’s back from her honeymoon, she’ll see all that you’ve done, and it will be greatly appreciated! A few more points and I’ll be done.
To the Maid of Honor. You have one of the biggest responsibilities. And you may not be told that, and you may not realize it, which is why you have to take the initiative to step up and take charge. Not of the wedding, of course, but of helping distribute the tasks to the other bridesmaids and making sure you all act as the bride’s minions in getting all of her evil doings done! If she has a to-do list thirty items long, ask what you can take care of. Make the phone calls to confirm reservations and vendors. Call the store to find out of price of those champagne flutes. There are a lot of little things that get overlooked by those helping, but sometimes, those little things are the biggest help. If you’re not so good at organizing and planning, and you’re more the creative type, use your gift and help create some masterpieces! Do your best to be as helpful and underwhelming as possible. Go over your ideas with the bride, and if she gives you the OK, DO ALL THE CRAFTS. Know how you can complement the bride’s personality with your own. If she’s more creative and dreamy, but you’re a planner, maybe suggest making up a checklist WITH her. Help organize her dreams and make them possible!

I hope this all makes sense. Remember everyone’s person is a unique individual and will require different help. What may have helped me may not be as helpful to another bride. But if you can remember to be as selfless and serving as possible, you will make the bride’s wedding a dream come true, and that’s something to be proud of!

Y.A.N.A.

Have you ever experienced inexplicable heartache? That deep sadness that floods your whole body like a tsunami and decides to make home in your soul?
   I'm feeling it today.
I don't really know why. Life hasn't been bad. I've been spending some time with family. I've formed a new friendship. The kitchen is getting redone (woohoo!).
   And yet...
   It's still there.
To be honest, I feel better now. Some Nintendoland with Liv and a nice warm bath with some Dekker calmed me down. But what I was feeling... still am feeling...
   It hurts.
Is it pathetic to hurt for no reason? It makes me feel like I'm falling into the stereotypical category of "emotional teenage girl." I hate that.
   Maybe there is a reason.
A conversation I had with a friend seemed to pierce my heart. I'm reminded of how desperately I want to pour out the stories of my soul to another person. Every struggle, pain, scar contained in my heart - I want it out. But I can't let it out.
I'm struggling. I'm standing on the edge of the cliff, overlooking what lies beneath. The vertigo is beginning to kick in, and if I look much longer...
   I'll fall.
Is it necessary to have someone to tell all to? Does everyone have a kindred spirit?
I found a quote from C.S. Lewis today that I think most everyone can relate to:

"Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, "What? You too? I thought I was the only one."

And from there you start discovering all sorts of mutualities. Hobbies, interests, opinions, the list goes on. What's even better are those few and many differences that put a spice into the relationship all the commonalities could not produce.
I'm not sure where this is going. I just realized I wandered off my original course, and now I'm not sure what my destination is. Then again, I never know where these posts will end up.
I suppose I just needed to write my feelings down. I'm sure you know how that goes. And if I put them in public form, they don't become so self-pitying as what the writings in my journal are. That is a struggle: self-pity. Stay far from that path, my friends. It ends in more destruction than you could possibly imagine.
As any rate, since I can't mind any good ending for this post (when can I ever?), I'll leave you with some quotes from Lewis. Adieu.

"We read to know that we are not alone."

"In your life, you meet people. Some you never think about again. Some, you wonder what happened to them. There are some that you wonder if they ever think about you. And then there are some you wish you never had to think about again. But you do."

"To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you."

"Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, no even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable."

"If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world."

"I believe in Christ like I believe in the sun - not because I can see it, but by it I can see everything else."

"There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind."

GNO - Good Times

I've been MIA for a few days... This would be because of a day of fun, a day of sleep, and a day of busyness. We'll start with the fun first :)

   Girls' Night Out!!!
This night was super fun. We had our hair and makeup done by a fabulous woman from our church; we traveled to one of the girls' house to have dinner (lasagna - my favorite!); then we put on our fancy dresses, went to a fancy restaurant, and drank fancy drinks (I had a Cinderella!) and ate fancy desserts. As I said, SUPER fun :)
Two lovelies from the young adult group in our church came to do the devotional for us. They had just come back from Passion and decided to give us a condensed version of Beth Moore's speech on the woman who had been bleeding for 12 years. That little passage somehow brought everyone out and almost everyone was giving some insight or opening up about something. I think we finally had our "bonding moment" as a group - and we also decided that GNOs should be more often than once a year; we're aiming for another one in, perhaps, April!
We watched some videos I had put together from past GNOs; Just Dance was played for about 15 minutes (they were a very hilarious 15 minutes); we played Quelf, which is, I'm pretty sure, the best game ever invented; an even funnier game of What If came about (this game is a tradition at all girly get-togethers); we doodled on the faces of some sleepers; we *sorta* watched Saw (I fell asleep...).
Breakfast was a feast. But we found out that we were going to be delayed on returning home. The night had brought us 4 inches of snow and the roads were a mess. But nobody complained about the extra chill time, of course. We eventually made it home :)
Getting hair done!

Makeup!

Sisters :P

Another set of sisters :P

Caught that at the perfect moment

In case you didn't recognize the lovely on the left, it's Miss Natalia from The Journal of Natalia Rose!

Black eye shadow makes a beautiful mustache ;)

The Temporary and the Everlasting

So last night I had a huge breakdown - but a good breakdown. I think sometimes I just get overwhelmed emotionally and, on very rare occasions, it just brings me to my knees and makes me praise God. Not whine, not complain, not ask for things I want, but just legit praising and worshiping of Him. I pray that He may be pleased with my miniscule offering, all that I have to give Him; just a small taste of my thanks and gratefulness.

Yes, I am so attractive.

I read through a few Psalms, just randomly opening my Bible and hoping to find something that may express my praise in some way. I eventually got to Psalm 23, a very familiar passage - ya know, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want..." etc., etc. But I really read it, each phrase individually, and for the first time, I think I really comprehended what it said.

I'll spare you my findings, but one thing that really hit me was in verse 3: "he restores my soul." And that's not a past tense statement. It's present tense. And for those of you who slept through English class, that means that it's presently occurring - it's still happening! (Well... maybe that's not technically what the present tense means, but I think it's what this verse means!) In the hard times, the times of sorrow, when you can't take one more thing, He completely restores you and recharges your spiritual battery. He gives a peace that no one else can give.

One last gooshy thing: God never changes. Change has been something I have always had a very hard time dealing with. And especially recently, things have been... a little overwhelming. I haven't been adjusting well to all the changes in my life, and every day has been breaking me down more and more. But I've truly discovered the peace in an unchanging God. He can't change. It is impossible for Him to change! And in a world and life that is always flipping something another way, it is extremely comforting to know God will never change! Friends can move away, family members will leave this life, children grow up, but God will always be there, always the same, always God.

   On a much lighter note...
   MY BESTEST FRIEND CAME HOME!!!!!
Rachel, the girl who has been living in Germany for 4 months, FINALLY came home for Christmas!! Best Christmas present ever. And as depressing as it is knowing she'll be going back in a few weeks, I've found such amazing comfort in our unchanging God, who won't ever leave me and can give me to strength to handle anything.

 Model poses :P

Oh yea, just FYI, these pictures are from tonight's youth group, uh... gathering. We had an interesting time... yea.

We played a very dangerous game of Spoons. Three people were bleeding in the end... I was one of them.

The lovely lady returned home :)

And I don't care how disgusting I look in this picture. I only care that we have finally been reunited ♥
